The mosque is recorded at 2 Browning Street, BD3 9DX, and according to JTI's own history the Browning Street mosque opened in 1970 as the second mosque of the movement. The JTI movement was founded by Pir Maroof Hussain Shah, who came to Bradford in 1961 as a migrant mill worker and began teaching the Qur'an to young men in the community. The organisation was established in 1963 (initially as Anjuman Tabligh-ul-Islam, later Jamiyat Tabligh-ul-Islam), and in 1965 Pir Maroof converted a house at 68 Southfield Square into the first JTI mosque, from which the network of mosques and supplementary schools across Bradford grew.
