From the 1860s onwards, Yemeni and Somali sailors began settling around Cardiff Bay's Tiger Bay docks, forming the first established Muslim communities in Wales. In 1947 the community opened the Noor-el-Islam Mosque on Maria Street, often described as the first purpose-built mosque in Wales. The South Wales Islamic Centre on Alice Street continued and expanded this heritage, providing a larger prayer hall and community facilities for what is now a diverse multi-ethnic congregation.
