The building was funded by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and designed by Basil Al-Bayati to blend traditional Islamic forms with the local Edinburgh sandstone tradition. Located on Potterrow next to the University of Edinburgh, the mosque has long served the city's mix of long-established families, students and visitors from around the world.
