The community traces its origins to 1976, when 15 York Road was purchased as a permanent place for prayer after Muslim students and local businessmen had been gathering in homes; neighbouring properties were later added as the congregation grew. In 2011 it completed the South West's first purpose-built mosque, and a larger rebuilt facility was opened around 2020 after roughly £1.7 million of construction. It is a registered charity (no. 274095) serving more than 2,000 Muslims in the city.
