Surah al-Falaq is the first of the two Mu'awwidhatain (the two seeking-refuge surahs). Together with Surah an-Nas (114), it forms the most powerful morning and evening protection in the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No other surah like these two has been revealed.'

Virtues & Benefits

-   One of the Mu'awwidhatain — the two surahs of seeking refuge, together equivalent to a full protection.
-   The Prophet ﷺ: 'No surah like these two has been revealed' (Sunan an-Nasa'i 952).
-   Daily recitation provides protection from every created evil, darkness, envy and harmful magic.

When to read

-   Recited three times each morning after Fajr as morning adhkar (Sunan Abu Dawud 5082).
-   Recited three times each evening after Asr as evening adhkar.
-   Recited before sleeping — blown onto the palms and wiped over the body.
-   Used as a healing supplication (ruqyah) against evil eye, envy and magic.

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ

Qul a'udhu bi-rabbi l-falaq

Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak'

مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Min sharri ma khalaq

From the evil of that which He created

3

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ

Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab

And from the evil of darkness when it settles

4

وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ

Wa min sharri n-naffathati fi l-'uqad

And from the evil of the blowers in knots

5

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad

And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
