Surah at-Takathur is a stark warning against the distraction of competing for worldly things — wealth, status, children — until death arrives and the inevitable reckoning begins. The Prophet ﷺ said this surah is equivalent to reciting 1,000 verses.

## Verses (8)

1

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ

Alhakumu t-takathur

Rivalry in worldly increase diverts you \[from the remembrance of Allah\]

2

حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ

Hatta zurtumu l-maqabir

Until you visit the graveyards.

3

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Kalla sawfa ta'lamun

No! You are going to know.

4

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Thumma kalla sawfa ta'lamun

Then no! You are going to know.

5

كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ

Kalla law ta'lamuna 'ilma l-yaqin

No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty...

6

لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ

Latarawunna l-jahim

You will surely see the Hellfire.

7

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ

Thumma latarawunnaha 'ayna l-yaqin

Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty.

8

ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ

Thumma latus'alunna yawma'idhin 'ani n-na'im

Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.
