The Five Daily Prayers (Salah / Namaz / Salat)
Every Muslim is required to perform five daily prayers at times determined by the sun's position. Known as Salah (Arabic), Namaz (Urdu/Persian) or Salat, the times change every day of the year and vary across UK cities due to differences in latitude and longitude.
- Fajr
- The pre-dawn prayer, beginning at true dawn (the first light before sunrise) and ending at sunrise. In the UK, Fajr ranges from around 2:30 AM in midsummer to 7:00 AM in midwinter.
- Dhuhr
- The midday prayer, beginning just after the sun passes its zenith (solar noon). In the UK, Dhuhr is typically around 1:00–1:15 PM throughout the year.
- Asr
- The afternoon prayer. The standard (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) method begins Asr when an object's shadow equals its own length; the Hanafi method uses twice the shadow length (making Asr later). Times range from around 2:00 PM in winter to 6:45 PM in summer.
- Maghrib
- The sunset prayer, beginning immediately at sunset. One of the shortest prayer windows — only until Isha begins. Ranges from around 3:30 PM in December to 9:30 PM in June across the UK.
- Isha
- The night prayer, beginning when the twilight (red glow) fully disappears after sunset. Ranges from around 6:30 PM in winter to past midnight in midsummer, though many UK mosques use adjusted times in summer.
