About the Islamic Calendar
The Islamic calendar (also called the Hijri calendar — Arabic: التقويم الهجري) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used worldwide by Muslims to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals — including Ramadan (the month of fasting), Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Hajj pilgrimage.
The calendar began from the year of the Hijra — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. The current Hijri year is 1447 AH (2025–2026 CE). Because the Islamic calendar is 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Islamic dates move progressively earlier each solar year.
