What is Zakat?
Zakat (Arabic: زكاة) is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% on net savings that have been held for one full lunar year (Hawl) and exceed the minimum threshold (Nisab). It is a right of the poor upon the wealth of the rich, and purifies one's remaining wealth.
Zakat can be paid to eight categories specified in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the destitute, those who administer Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, to free captives, to those in debt, in the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah), and to the stranded traveller.
