Dua Upon Waking from Sleep

The first words a believer speaks upon waking should be gratitude and remembrance of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught a specific supplication for this moment, which acknowledges that sleep is a minor death and waking is a new gift of life from Allah.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Transliteration

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi-n-nushūr.

Translation

All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having caused us to die, and unto Him is the resurrection.

When to recite

The first words upon waking from any sleep — night sleep or daytime nap.
Before sitting up, before reaching for the phone.

Acknowledges that waking up is not guaranteed — it is a gift from Allah.
Begins the day with hamd (praise), which is one of the greatest forms of dhikr.
Sets the tone for a day of gratitude and consciousness of Allah.
