Dua Upon Waking from Sleep
The first words a believer speaks upon waking should be gratitude and remembrance of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught a specific supplication for this moment, which acknowledges that sleep is a minor death and waking is a new gift of life from Allah.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Transliteration
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi-n-nushūr.
Translation
All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having caused us to die, and unto Him is the resurrection.

When to recite
- The first words upon waking from any sleep — night sleep or daytime nap.
- Before sitting up, before reaching for the phone.
