About London Central Mosque (Regent's Park)

London Central Mosque, formally known as the Islamic Cultural Centre (ICC), stands at 146 Park Road on the edge of Regent's Park in the Royal Borough of Westminster. Its golden dome and slender minaret have been a landmark of the London skyline since the mosque opened its doors in 1977.

The story of the mosque begins during the Second World War. In 1944, King George VI gifted a site in Regent's Park to the Muslim community as a gesture of recognition for the tens of thousands of Muslim soldiers from across the British Empire who fought and died alongside Allied forces. The gift was a symbol of goodwill between Britain and the Islamic world at a critical moment in history. The site was entrusted to the Islamic Cultural Centre, established the same year, which became responsible for managing the mosque and promoting Islamic education and culture in Britain.

The building itself was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd CBE RA, one of the most distinguished British architects of the twentieth century, also known for designing Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Construction began in 1969 and the mosque was inaugurated in 1977. The golden dome, 15 metres in diameter, is visible from across Regent's Park and has become one of the most recognisable religious buildings in London. The mosque complex includes a main prayer hall capable of holding approximately 5,000 worshippers, a women's prayer gallery, a library, an Islamic bookshop, a halal restaurant, conference facilities and offices for the Islamic Cultural Centre. It draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and worshippers every year — Muslims and non-Muslims alike — and has long been a focus for Friday Jummah prayer, Eid celebrations, and interfaith events attended by leaders from government, religious and civil society.
