About Shah Jahan Mosque

Built in 1889 by Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner and funded by the Begum Shah Jahan of Bhopal, this Mughal-style mosque was the first purpose-built mosque in the UK — predating all other permanent mosques in Britain by nearly 50 years. It served as the centre of British Islam for much of the early 20th century.
